Understanding the Process

If you’ve never had therapy before, it’s natural to feel uncertain. Knowing how psychotherapy works can help ease concerns and give you confidence to take the first step.

The First Session

Your first appointment is a chance to share what brings you to therapy. You won’t be pressured to talk about anything before you’re ready. Together, we’ll outline goals and discuss the approach that best fits your needs.

What Happens in Ongoing Sessions

Each session typically lasts 50 minutes and provides space to:

  • Explore your feelings in a non-judgemental environment
  • Recognise patterns in your thoughts and behaviour
  • Develop coping tools for daily challenges
  • Reflect on past experiences that may affect the present

Approaches to Therapy

Psychotherapy can take different forms, such as:

  • Psychodynamic therapy – uncovering patterns rooted in early experiences
  • CBT-informed methods – challenging unhelpful thoughts
  • Humanistic therapy – focusing on growth and self-acceptance

Benefits of Therapy

Many clients report:

  • Better emotional resilience
  • Improved relationships
  • Reduced anxiety and stress
  • A stronger sense of self-understanding

Frequently Asked Questions

The first session is about understanding your needs and goals. It’s a chance to ask questions and get comfortable with the process.

Most clients attend weekly sessions, but the frequency can be adjusted to your personal needs.

That’s okay. Therapy is a space to explore your thoughts, even if you’re not sure where to start.

You may notice improvements in your mood, relationships, or ability to cope with stress. Progress can be gradual, but consistent.
