What is couples counselling?

Also known as relationship counselling or marriage counselling, couples counselling involves helping couples find a solution to problems in their relationship. This is conducted with the help of a professional relationship counsellor or therapist.

Do I need couples counselling?

All couples experience conflict. In many cases, couples are able to work through problems on their own. However, there are some issues that are harder to solve alone. This is when the insight and advice of a neutral third party is needed.

If you are experiencing difficult times in your relationships and you are unable to come to a resolution together, it could be worth considering couples counselling. One of our professional counsellors will be able to provide you with the neutral third party perspective you need, while also using studied relationship psychology measures to find a solution.

Couples counselling is not just for couples on the brink of breaking up. In fact, it can be used to address all kinds of problems. Some of the common issues that lead couples to explore couples counselling include:

  • Lack of communication
  • Lack of trust/lies
  • Lack of commitment
  • Lack of responsibility
  • Jealousy and paranoia
  • Troubles with intimacy/sexual issues
  • Conflicting parenting styles
  • Conflict with other family members (such as in-laws)
  • Stress on a relationship caused by work
  • Stress on a relationship caused by financial issues
  • Stress on a relationship caused by mental illness or addiction
  • Infidelity

How we can help

Couples counselling typically involves a series of sessions. In these sessions, both partners may receive individual one-on-one counselling sessions, as well as joint sessions, depending on the nature of the problem. These sessions aim to find a solution to any problems identified, which could include setting goals going forward. Future sessions may be scheduled to keep up with the progress of these goals.

At Dr Jo Gee Psychological Therapies, we understand that every relationship is different and therefore every solution needs to be tailored to your individual circumstances. We can help to ask the questions and find the answers that you hadn’t even considered. Everything discussed will be kept confidential and sessions can be booked around your schedules.
